Week Three Prompt Response
1. I am looking for a book by Laurell K. Hamilton. I just read the third book in the Anita Blake series and I can’t figure out which one comes next! The fourth book is called the “Lunatic Café,” and as a heads up, the fifth book is called “Bloody Bones.” 2. What have I read recently? Well, I just finished this great book by Barbara Kingsolver, Prodigal Summer. I really liked the way it was written, you know, the way she used language. I wouldn't mind something a bit faster paced though. If you liked that read, I would also suggest “Bloodroot” by Amy Green. This book is a bit faster paced, but it still has a similar writing style that is lyrical like Kingsolver’s style. I would also recommend “Frog Music” by Emma Donoghue. She also has a similar writing style that is lush and lyrical but is faster paced. If you are looking for an author similar to Kingsolver, I would recommend Annie Dillard who has a writing style that is descriptive, lush, richly detailed and lyrical. 3. I like rea...

Hi Darla,
ReplyDeleteI love your annotation and specifically "all-around pain in the bones." That line made me chuckle. I appreciate how you gave descriptors for the read-alike authors to give us a feel for different types of science fiction works we can read. Did you enjoy the book?
Abby Abbott
Abby,
DeleteI did! Once I started it, I had trouble putting it down. The author really kept the pace moving and had me staying up way past my bedtime haha.
Hi Darla,
ReplyDeleteYour annotation looks so cool!
I agree with Abby, I love that you not only give read-alike authors, but descriptions of their writing style as well. I may just steal the idea and use it on my next one! (or the one after, my next one is my out-of-comfort-zone nonfiction selection) I am not a particularly big fan of science fiction, usually steering more towards fantasy than sci-fi, but I love your synopsis and think you did a great job getting the plot across and making me want more :)
Jennifer,
DeleteThank you so much! Feel free to use anything :) I am also doing nonfiction and that is way out of my comfort zone as well. I feel like we have similar reading habits because I also tend to lean towards fantasy as well!! This was a great read and I wonder if it would be a good sci-fi pick for you :)
Hello Darla,
ReplyDeleteTamsyn Muir has been on my "to-read" for awhile now! Gideon the Ninth (book) looks so cool in person, the all-black pages/cover really stands out on the shelf. I've been watching it swirl around in circulation, but I haven't gotten a chance to start it myself (yet). Your synopsis has definitely solidified my decision to read it! Thank you for your post!
Thank you for your kind words! It was definitely worth the read :)
DeleteI had never heard of this book - and now I want to read it. I enjoyed the aesthetic of your annotation and the fun overview ( I kind of want to say your a pain in the bones now). I really like books with a little humor thrown in - I would like to give this one a try!
ReplyDeleteBobbi,

The layout is stunning and so is the summary! This book sounds so intriguing and I think your appeals really helped build up the summary and make the book sound even more exciting. Full points!
