Week Six Prompt
Let's get real. 2020 was horrifying. And 2021 isn't off to that great of a start either! It honestly feels like we are in The Upside Down from Stranger Things. I think we should embrace the strangeness and create a display of horror books and DVDs with a fun eye catching twist.
I propose that on our display table we make a large Demogoron (from the popular show Stranger Things) out of construction paper and cardboard with a sign that says, "Library Things to Read" on the topside and a mirror image that says "Library Things to Watch" on the bottom. I also think that we should use a black table cloth artfully scrunched up and spilling over the sides to give the display more depth and more contrast for the books and DVDs to stand out. String lights would also be a great touch. On the top side, I propose that we have books and DVDs in book stands. This would be a great opportunity to have integrated advisory which is, "a way of providing advisory services to library users that includes all different formats and media while staying focused around a genre" (Dunneback & Towner, 2010, p. xii). I think we should do a book and DVD pairing with a small sign in between these that says, "If This Scared You, Try This." On the underside of the table, I think we should use large rubber bands and hooks to hang some books and DVDs upside down, making the display eye catching and different from what we usually do.
Lastly, I propose that we create a curated list handout of popular horror movies that match to similar books, and vice versa. This could be a more in depth list that patrons could take home to examine further if they do not have the time to really look at the display, or they are just interested in looking at more titles. I propose that this list also be made available on social media and our website to reach those patrons who use only digital formats, are unable to come in, etc.
Horror books and DVDs do not have to be limited to only Halloween time. By creating this display, we could break the mold and increase circulation of this genre more than once a year. This display would be a great opportunity to give this genre the attention it deserves and give recognition to those patrons who love horror all year round.

What a fun idea! I think this would be really eye-catching. I especially like the idea of displaying some things upside down; I think this would draw some extra attention and get people to linger at the display.
ReplyDeleteAmber,
DeleteThank you! I thought it would be difficult to hang books upside down but when I zoomed into that photo on Pinterest it looked so fun and easy!
You are so right, 2020 was horrifying. I also think using something horrifying to introduce a fun reading activity is just what we need. I really enjoy the idea of having a curated handout as well, it all sounds so fun! Love the ideas.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteI love it! I'm a huge Stranger Things fan and your display sounds awesome! I agree with you about the Halloween-centric displays-there are so many good horror books and they deserve year-round attention!
ReplyDeleteI also love Stranger Things! I have been kind of sad that there is no release date yet (at least that I've heard of) for the next season because of COVID delays, and this display would just help fill that void in my heart :)
DeleteOh my goodness! I love this idea - super fun and eye catching. Even people who aren't familiar with Stranger Things would love it! Full points!
